Hoani played for the Melbourne Rebels during their inaugural season of the Super 15 in 2011. He played for the Highlanders for four years in his native New Zealand before moving to Europe to play for the Newport Gwent Dragons in their last two campaigns.

Hoani has also represented the New Zealand Maori in international competition.
